Use Small Images on an Ecommerce Web Site

There are many great image programs and you can use them to create graphics for your site, text images, or modify your product photos for your ecommerce web site. There are many types of images that you can use on your site, but we will go over only a few of them.

The best images for you to use on your site are either .gif files or .jpg files. These files compress well and are easily displayed by all of the major web browsers. Your online store will need to have many photos, and we suggest that hard work go into optimizing your photos and keeping the size of them small.

When you compress your images, a typical dots-per-inch(dpi) resolution for your images is 72-dpi. This is a well known web standard and we recommend this for ecommerce web sites. Remember that 80% of the visitors who get to your site will be on a 56k modem.

When your images are viewed over the internet, they will be viewed by many different operating systems, using different video cards, displayed on various monitors, with varying monitor resolutions. So always remember that for most ecommerce web sites, it is important to be conservative with your photographs. And when using photoshop or another image compression utility keep it to 72-dpi.
